Dr Patricia Hamilton – 2008

Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Neonatal Paediatrics at St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, and President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

“Ethics of Withholding and Withdrawing Treatment in Neonatal Asphyxia”

Dr Hamilton qualified from the University of Bristol and trained in paediatrics in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford and Vancouver. She is an active clinician in neonatology, continuing regular on call duties during her Presidency. Her research interests have included the pathophysiology of birth asphyxia.  She has been a Medical Director at St George’s Hospital, and has been closely involved in developing new training programmes and teaching and assessment methods, and in working to make MMC appropriate for paediatrics. She is co-Chair of the London Children’s Clinical Pathways group.

Dr Hamilton has chaired many College committees and working parties, including those that produced training packages in child protection and child mental health. She chairs the steering group of the Clinical Engagement in Medical Leadership project run by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the National Institute for Innovation and Improvement, which is developing curricula in clinical management and leadership for medical undergraduates and postgraduates. She also serves on several of the other Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Education and Training Committees.  She is a Board member of PMETB and is active on its Training and Visits committees.

Lord Patel – 2007

Chair of the National Patient Safety Association, former President of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and Chairman of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges.

“Safety in Medicine – Protocol or Prayer”.

Lord Patel delivered the Lecture at the Hebrew University / Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem on Monday 30th April 2007. This meeting takes place under very unusual circumstances. In addition to this visit to Israel, Lord Patel has had to express his strong opposition to boycott of Israel and to ostracism of Israel and Israeli medicine.
