Birmingham Annual Report 2009-2010
Annual Report to Birmingham Medical Students Society
This year has been a huge success for JMed (Jewish Medics Society) as subscriptions doubled to 80 members. Our events have been well attended and we continue to promote Birmingham Medical School as a reputable course with an excellent support system for young Jewish medics.
We held a Freshers’ Meet & Greet evening to introduce the society pass down pearls of wisdom and welcome them to Medical School. We employed the valuable “family” system to ease the transition.
We organised an extremely successful Tay – Sachs (a fatal infantile genetic disease) screening evening attended by 100 Jewish Students and community members. The evening was run in conjunction with the Birmingham Clinical Genetics Service and was the first of its kind in the West Midlands.
We hosted a Sabbath Evening Meal at the local synagogue which was enjoyed by 40 students from Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and London medical schools.
December 2009 saw 14 Jewish Medics hit the slopes of Les Deux Alpes for the first annual Jewish Medical Association (UK) Ski Trip. The trip was an all round success with no broken bones!
Other events so far this year have included a pub crawl through Harborne, a charity bike ride, a series of Jewish Medical Ethics lectures delivered by field expert Rabbi Tatz, speakers from women’s aid charity Kairos, a salsa night in Jamhouse, and a Leavers’ BBQ. In all, a very busy year for the society!
