Student Activities 2012-2013
October 2012 – Fireworks night opening party
We decided to start off this year’s sJMA activities, quite literally, with a bang! Our first event of the year, a fireworks night kindly hosted at a family home in NW London, was a great success and gave the new co-chairs, Shier and Joseph, a great opportunity to introduce themselves and set the tone for a year filled with similarly spectacular sJMA events. Over 40 medical/medically affiliated students attended, and enjoyed an evening filled with new introductions, snacks, drinks, and a sometimes perilously close fireworks display.
November 2012- ‘Circumcision circumscribed- An Interfaith Perspective’
During University interfaith week, in partnership with the Muslim Health Student Network, we hosted an evening at the wonderful Chadwick Lecture theatre UCL dedicated to tackling questions about circumcision practices in the Jewish and Muslim communities.
As medical students we felt we should know more about the contemporary issues surrounding circumcision, and aimed to explore ethical, legal and medical perspectives regarding the practice. With this in mind, the London Jewish and Muslim medical student groups put together an expert panel discussion, with Dr Asim Yusuf, Dr Usama Hasan, Proffessor David Katz and Barrister Adam Wagner.
The evening was a great success in terms of enhancing our understanding of circumcision practices and ethics, as well as allowing students and doctors to leave the talk feeling more capable of answering important questions regarding circumcision. gave us an opportunity to strengthen our interfaith relationship with the Muslim Health community.
February 2013 – sJMA pub quiz
In the delightful setting of UCL’s print room café/bar medical students (and an FY1!) came together to test their medical and pop culture knowledge. Our previous sJMA co-chair and pub quiz connoisseur Josh Gaon very kindly prepared the quiz, with rounds including music, medicine, sports and more. The winning team of the quiz was led by our current co-chairs Shier & Joseph, who claimed a very narrow but nonetheless satisfying victory by only half a point!
February 2013- sJMA Annual Friday Night Dinner
The sJMA Friday night dinner event is quite likely one of our most highly anticipated of the year, and after the resounding success of this year’s dinner we can definitely understand why. South Hampstead synagogue very generously allowed us to use their hall for our valentine’s themed dinner. Student’s enjoyed the wonderful gastronomic and social aspects of the night, as well as insightful discussions by Professor Katz on circumcision, Dr Berger on radiology , Dr Cohen on Pediatrics and our very own Joseph Machta on his experience surviving cancer as an adolescent.
The Friday night was one of our favourite events of the year, and we hope it is a tradition that continues to grow and flourish in future years to come.
May 2013- JMA annual dinner
This year the JMA dinner saw a great sJMA presence, and the student’s had a very enjoyable evening socialising, networking and hearing Ambassador Taub give an thought-provoking talk. The event also gave the students an opportunity to appreciate and reflect on how much effort and care they receive from JMA members in terms of career progression and support. They also got to hear two toasts from the sJMA co-chairs , most notably in the form of a delightful poem toasting to the Queen in from Joseph M.
