Jewish doctors

How many Jewish doctors are there in the UK?

The General Medical Council’s “State of medical education and practice in the UK – Workforce Report” was published on 13.11.23 The following is the part of the report which covers “religion, sexual orientation, and disability”

“The majority (83%) of licensed doctors in 2022 shared information about their religion and sexual orientation. While only 43% of doctors aged 70 and over provided information on their religious beliefs and sexual orientation, 99.9% of those aged 20 to 29 did. In terms of doctor groups, high proportions of doctors in training (97%) and SAS and LE doctors (92%) shared this information, which is likely because a high number of these doctors joined the register after we started collecting these data.

The proportion of the UK’s general population who report being disabled* is markedly larger than among the medical workforce, which may be a signal that being disabled is less common among doctors—or that doctors with a disability may not always declare this to us.

There were also differences in the most common disabilities. Among licensed doctors, learning disabilities and mental health conditions were the two most common but among UK working-age adults, mobility and mental health conditions were.*

We share these data to improve understanding of the diversity of the medical profession. UK health systems should use the data for equality impact assessments, and to help identify issues that affect particular groups of doctors. As more data are collected in coming years, we will continue to show changes over time and share our emerging insights”.

In addition the GMC published their data on doctors from different faith groups based on registration. This can be accessed here.
